There's always a lot of talk about omega 3, and why it's important to get enough intake daily, or at least regularly each week. The three key fatty acids that make it up are ALA, EPA and DHA – we'll stick to these abbreviations throughout, since the full names are a mouthful.
The main functions of omega 3 include:

- Supporting circulation throughout the body, including to the heart and brain
- Providing essential fats the body can't produce enough of on its own, meaning adequate dietary intake matters – distinct from the saturated and trans fats linked to higher cholesterol risk
Can a Lack of Omega 3 Cause Sleep Problems?
Research suggests it can. Some studies have found that higher levels of omega-3 DHA – a long-chain fatty acid found particularly in algae and seafood – are associated with better sleep quality. DHA in particular appears important for brain function, including learning and attention span; some studies looking at schoolchildren have even linked lower DHA levels to daytime tiredness and difficulty concentrating in class. - Some seafood too, such as oysters, prawns, crab and lobster – though oily fish themselves are generally the more concentrated source
Vegetables and Fruit
Most vegetables and fruit don't contain much ALA, the main plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, so it's worth eating a good variety to get meaningful amounts. The body can convert ALA into the more active EPA and DHA forms, but only in small quantities.
Brussels sprouts are one of the better vegetable sources, followed by spinach. Cooking them can actually make certain nutrients more available than eating them raw – worth experimenting with different preparation methods if boiled or steamed sprouts aren't your thing.
Nuts & Seeds
Chia seeds are one of the richest plant sources of ALA – a teaspoon provides a genuinely useful contribution toward daily ALA needs, though it's worth remembering that ALA converts to the more directly beneficial EPA and DHA fairly inefficiently, so relying on plant sources alone may not fully cover your needs.

Cold-pressed nut and seed oils also provide a concentrated dose of omega 3. Some meat and dairy products contain omega 3 too, particularly when sourced from grass-fed livestock.
